Miyama district
美山の杉林

Fukui City’s Miyama district is composed of about 90% woodland, prospering from timber production from long ago, and is known as the leader of the nation for large-diameter trees. Parts of the mountain accumulate over 2m of snow in winter, and the Japanese ceder trees of Miyama that have fallen as a result are lifted and propped up come spring in order to ensure their continued healthy growth.

福井市美山地区は山林面積が約9割を占めており、古くから林業が盛んで、全国有数の大径木の生産地として知られています。山間部では積雪が２ｍを超えるところもあるため、春には雪の重みで倒れた杉を起こす作業を行うなど、日々の地道な作業が美山の杉を支えています。

Dengaku and Noh performances　
田楽能舞

Every February 15th, the Nō stage at Ukan Shrine comes alive with Ikeda-cho’s annual Mizuumi no Dengaku Nōmai, a performance tradition that has continued for 750 years and been designated a National Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

池田町水海の鵜甘(うかん)神社において、毎年２月15日に奉納されている「水海の田楽能舞」。およそ750年にわたり受け継がれ、国の重要無形民俗文化財にも指定されています。

Nishiyamakoen Park
西山公園

Nishiyama Park, a rest and recreation site for Sabae City residents, boasts 50,000 azalea blossoms and a place among Japan’s 100 Historical Parks. From cherry blossoms in spring, to azaleas in early summer, to the sea of colored leaves in fall, to yukitsuri in winter, each seasonholds something to love about the park. The Azalea Festival and Momiji Festival beckon visitors from near and far.

鯖江市民憩いの場、西山公園は、約５万株のつつじが咲き乱れる日本海側随一のつつじの名勝で、「日本の歴史公園100選」にも選ばれています。春のさくら、初夏のつつじ、秋のもみじ、冬の雪つりなど四季折々の景観が楽しめ、「つつじまつり」や「もみじまつり」には多くの人で賑わいます。

Yanagi-no-taki Waterfall　
柳の滝

Approximately 3km along the Gankutsudani River, a tributary of Mizuma River, stands Mt. Gongen, whose 5 waterfalls (the Yanagi no Taki) are said to have been where samurai Kojirō perfected his tsubamegaeshi sword technique.

水間川の支流、岩窟谷（がんくつだに）川沿いを権現山(標高565m)へ登っていく途中にある柳の滝は、大小5つの滝で成り立っています。

Narcissus flowers blooming everywhere　
一面に咲く水仙の花

Winter at the Echizen Coast is colored by fields of the narcissus, which bloom from mid-December to the beginning of January.

冬の越前海岸を美しく彩るものとして、12月中旬から２月上旬にかけて開花する越前水仙の群生は代表的な景観です。

The Nanjō district of Minami Echizen-cho is the foremost site of lotus production and harvesting in all of Japan.

南越前町南条地区は日本を代表する花ハスの生産地で、生産量は日本一を誇っています。

Yasha ga Ike
夜叉ヶ池

Yasha ga Ike is a pond surrounded by primeval forest, nestled on the northern face of Mikuni ga Take on the border between Fukui and Gifu Prefecture.

夜叉ヶ池（やしゃがいけ）は、福井県と岐阜県の境、三国ヶ岳の北側、周囲は原生林におおわれた標高1,090mの山頂付近にある周囲約230m、最深7.8mの池です。

Bashaku Highway
馬借街道

To avoid congestion along the Kinome Pass, shipping was sent from Tsuruga to the Kōno Inlet, from which it travelled to Fuchū (in present-day Echizen City) along the Bashaku Highway. This route conveyed vital goods throughout the area.

交通の要所であった木ノ芽峠を通らず、敦賀から海路で河野浦に渡り、そこから陸路で府中（現越前市）に物資を運んでいた馬借（ばしゃく）街道が残っており、生活を支えていた光景を偲ぶことができます。
